The 2026 Canadian Football League season is already delivering exactly what bettors should expect from the CFL: close games, changing momentum and very little separation between several contenders.
With the season moving into Week 8, the championship picture is beginning to take shape. Saskatchewan entered the year as the defending Grey Cup champion, Montreal has climbed to the top of the league’s power rankings, Edmonton has emerged as a legitimate threat and several traditional contenders remain close enough to make a run.
The 113th Grey Cup will be played on November 15, 2026, at McMahon Stadium in Calgary. That gives every team plenty of time to improve, but the opening weeks have already revealed which clubs deserve serious attention in the futures market.
Here is the FirePicksHQ betting preview for the rest of the 2026 CFL season.
Saskatchewan Roughriders: The Team to Beat
Saskatchewan entered the season attempting to defend its 2025 Grey Cup championship, and the Roughriders have done little to suggest that last year’s title was a fluke.
Through five games, Saskatchewan owned a 4–1 record while scoring 170 points. The Roughriders also opened the season with four victories in their first five games, including two wins within the West Division.
The biggest reason Saskatchewan remains dangerous is its balance. The Roughriders have an experienced quarterback, explosive receiving talent and a defense capable of creating timely stops. Trevor Harris may not provide the same rushing threat as some younger CFL quarterbacks, but his experience and command of the offense make Saskatchewan difficult to pressure.
Saskatchewan was listed around +260 to repeat as Grey Cup champion when the futures market was checked in early July. That price makes the Roughriders the favourite, but it does not leave much room for error.
The concern for bettors is value. Saskatchewan may be the safest championship selection, but the Roughriders play in a competitive West Division and will likely need to survive at least one difficult playoff matchup.
Betting outlook: A legitimate championship favourite, but the futures price is becoming expensive.
Montreal Alouettes: The Strongest Team Right Now
Montreal has developed into one of the most complete teams in the CFL and currently sits first in the league’s official power rankings.
The Alouettes have shown that they can win through offense, defense and late-game execution. Their ability to consistently make important plays has separated them from much of the East Division during the opening portion of the season.
Montreal was listed around +350 in the Grey Cup futures market, making the Alouettes the second choice behind Saskatchewan.
That price is appealing because Montreal may have the easier path to the championship game. The East Division remains competitive, but it does not currently appear as deep as the West. If the Alouettes can secure home-field advantage, they could avoid multiple difficult road games before the Grey Cup.
Montreal also offers the kind of defensive stability that matters in the postseason. CFL games are often decided by one turnover, one special-teams play or one late drive. Teams that can remain composed in those situations usually become the strongest playoff bets.
The Alouettes ranked first in the league’s July 21 power rankings, ahead of Edmonton, Saskatchewan and Calgary.
Betting outlook: The best combination of championship potential and reasonable value among the leading contenders.
Edmonton Elks: The Biggest Surprise
Edmonton may be the most important team for bettors to monitor during the remainder of the season.
The Elks opened with four wins in their first five games, matching Saskatchewan’s eight points in the West Division standings. Edmonton also allowed fewer points than the Roughriders over that stretch, giving the team a positive scoring differential and an early claim as a true contender.
Edmonton was priced around +1000 to win the Grey Cup in early July. That number was much longer than Saskatchewan, Montreal, Calgary or BC, despite the Elks’ strong opening record.
That creates potential value, but bettors should remain cautious. Early-season success does not always translate into postseason results, especially for a team still proving it can perform consistently against the strongest opponents.
The Elks must also navigate a difficult West Division. Saskatchewan, Winnipeg, Calgary and BC all possess enough talent to make the playoffs, meaning Edmonton could play well and still face a challenging route to the Grey Cup.
However, a team with a strong record being offered at double-digit odds deserves attention.
Betting outlook: The best longshot futures option if a price near +1000 remains available.
Calgary Stampeders: Dangerous Despite the Record
Calgary’s record does not tell the complete story.
The Stampeders opened 2–3, but they scored 194 points through five games—the highest total among the West Division teams listed in the official standings at that time. The problem was defense, as Calgary also allowed 176 points.
That combination makes the Stampeders an interesting game-to-game betting team. Calgary has enough offensive ability to cover spreads and push totals over, but the defense makes it difficult to trust the team as a short-priced favourite.
The Stampeders were listed around +640 in the Grey Cup market.
Calgary will also have extra motivation because the Grey Cup is being played at McMahon Stadium. Reaching the championship game at home would create one of the biggest atmospheres of the CFL season.
The Stampeders are not currently as reliable as Saskatchewan or Montreal, but they have enough offensive upside to become dangerous if the defense improves during the second half.
Betting outlook: Better suited for individual game totals and underdog spreads than a championship futures wager.
BC Lions: The Best Bounce-Back Candidate
The BC Lions remain one of the most talented teams in the league, even if the early results have not fully matched expectations.
BC entered the season with reigning Most Outstanding Player Nathan Rourke leading the offense. Rourke gives the Lions one of the highest ceilings in the CFL because he can attack defenses with his arm while also creating plays outside the pocket.
The Lions were listed around +700 to win the Grey Cup, although some earlier markets had them closer to the favourites.
BC’s offensive potential makes the team difficult to dismiss. If the offensive line protects Rourke and the defense becomes more consistent, the Lions can defeat any opponent in a single playoff game.
The concern is whether BC can consistently win the line of scrimmage against Saskatchewan, Edmonton and Winnipeg. Talent at quarterback matters, but the West Division playoffs often become physical, low-margin games.
At the right number, BC may offer more upside than Calgary and Winnipeg.
Betting outlook: A strong buy-low championship candidate if the odds continue drifting upward.
Hamilton Tiger-Cats: The East Division Value Play
Hamilton has climbed the league’s power rankings and may be the most interesting alternative to Montreal in the East.
The Tiger-Cats have enough offensive talent to compete in high-scoring games and benefit from playing several important home matchups at Hamilton Stadium. Their receiving group gives them the ability to create explosive plays, while the offense can score quickly when the quarterback play is efficient.
Hamilton was listed around +900 in the Grey Cup market.
That price could offer value because the Tiger-Cats may only need to defeat Montreal once in the playoffs to reach the Grey Cup. However, Hamilton must prove it can deliver consistent defensive performances before becoming a trustworthy futures selection.
The Tiger-Cats are likely to remain an attractive betting option when listed as a home underdog. Their offense gives them comeback ability, and CFL spreads can change quickly after one turnover or special-teams play.
Betting outlook: An appealing East Division longshot, especially at +900 or better.
Winnipeg Blue Bombers: Never Count Them Out
Winnipeg remains one of the most respected organizations in the CFL.
The Blue Bombers opened 3–2 and were still positioned near the middle of the West Division standings. That record may not appear dominant, but Winnipeg’s experience gives the team an advantage in important games.
Zach Collaros and the Bombers’ veteran core understand how to manage pressure, protect leads and win playoff games. That experience cannot be ignored, even if the roster is older than some of its rivals.
Winnipeg was priced around +1000 in the Grey Cup futures market.
The question is whether the Bombers can remain healthy and generate enough explosive offense. Winnipeg has historically relied on physical football, efficient quarterback play and strong defense. When those elements are present, the Bombers remain dangerous.
At +1000, Winnipeg offers more value than Saskatchewan but may have a lower overall ceiling than Edmonton or BC.
Betting outlook: A respectable longshot, but not the strongest value available in the West.
Toronto Argonauts: A High-Risk Betting Team
Toronto entered the season attempting to recover from a disappointing 2025 campaign.
The Argonauts have championship experience throughout the organization, but the team has dealt with uncertainty at quarterback and inconsistency on both sides of the ball.
Toronto was listed around +900 to win the Grey Cup.
That number appears too short unless the Argonauts establish greater consistency. Toronto may still qualify for the playoffs because of the East Division structure, but simply reaching the postseason does not make the team a strong futures bet.
The Argonauts could become more attractive in individual games when receiving points against heavily backed opponents. Their talent and experience make them capable of producing an upset, even if they are difficult to trust weekly.
Betting outlook: Avoid the Grey Cup future for now, but watch for underdog opportunities.
Ottawa Redblacks: The Team to Avoid
Ottawa appears to have the longest road to championship contention.
The Redblacks were priced around +5000 in the Grey Cup market, significantly longer than every other team.
Long odds can sometimes create temptation, but a futures bet still needs a realistic path to winning. Ottawa would need major improvement on both sides of the ball, greater consistency at quarterback and enough victories to qualify for the postseason.
The Redblacks may occasionally provide value as a large underdog, particularly in divisional games where familiarity can keep the score close. However, they are not currently a serious championship option.
Betting outlook: Avoid the Grey Cup market. Consider only selective large underdog spreads.
Best 2026 CFL Futures Bets
Best Overall Bet: Montreal Alouettes to Win the Grey Cup
Montreal combines strong current form, the top position in the league’s power rankings and a potentially easier playoff path through the East Division.
The Alouettes may not possess Saskatchewan’s defending-champion status, but a price near +350 offers a better balance between probability and payout.
Best Value Bet: Edmonton Elks to Win the Grey Cup
Edmonton’s 4–1 start placed the Elks alongside Saskatchewan at the top of the West standings, yet the futures price remained much longer.
The West Division path will be difficult, but +1000 is an attractive number for a team that has already demonstrated it can win consistently.
Best Longshot Bet: Hamilton Tiger-Cats to Win the Grey Cup
Hamilton has enough offensive talent to challenge Montreal and may not need to survive as many elite opponents as the West Division contenders.
At +900 or longer, the Tiger-Cats offer a realistic combination of upside and potential playoff opportunity.
Final Prediction
The CFL remains one of the most unpredictable football leagues to bet because of its three-down format, large field, special-teams importance and frequent late-game swings.
Saskatchewan remains the safest selection, but the Roughriders’ short price limits the potential return. Edmonton and BC offer appealing upside in the West, while Hamilton provides a possible longshot route through the East.
Montreal is the strongest selection at this point in the season. The Alouettes have shown balance, consistency and the ability to win close games—all qualities that become increasingly important in November.
