Match Preview
The Toronto Blue Jays and Washington Nationals complete their three-game series at Nationals Park on Wednesday, July 29, 2026. First pitch is scheduled for 1:05 p.m. ET.
Toronto will start right-hander Trey Yesavage, while Washington counters with right-hander Zack Littell. Yesavage enters with a 4-5 record, a 3.92 ERA and 87 strikeouts. Littell carries a 7-8 record, a 5.17 ERA and 66 strikeouts into the afternoon finale.
The teams have split the opening two games. Toronto won Monday’s opener 3-2 before Washington responded with an 8-6 victory Tuesday. The Nationals scored four runs during the first inning after Shane Bieber struggled with his command and eventually built enough of an advantage to withstand Toronto’s late comeback attempt.
Washington’s pitching matchup is not ideal because Littell owns the higher ERA. However, Yesavage has struggled during the summer, posting a 6.11 ERA in July after recording a 4.75 mark in June. He has allowed 12 earned runs over 17⅔ July innings, providing Washington’s improving lineup with a realistic opportunity to take control.
The Nationals are the preferred moneyline selection in a competitive series finale.
Toronto Blue Jays Analysis
Yesavage gives Toronto the stronger season-long starting numbers.
His 3.92 ERA and 87 strikeouts compare favourably with Littell’s 5.17 ERA and 66 strikeouts. When Yesavage establishes his fastball and works ahead, he has enough swing-and-miss ability to limit Washington’s dangerous young hitters.
The concern is his declining recent form.
After producing a 2.56 ERA in May, Yesavage’s monthly ERA increased to 4.75 in June and 6.11 in July. Washington should attack pitches inside the strike zone and avoid helping him escape through aggressive swings at breaking balls outside it.
Toronto must also determine the availability of Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Guerrero left Tuesday’s game after experiencing a right hamstring issue while running out an infield single. Losing him, or having him play at less than full strength, would remove a major source of power and on-base production from the Blue Jays lineup.
The Blue Jays still showed fight after falling behind Tuesday. George Springer hit a three-run homer in the eighth inning, while Kazuma Okamoto added a solo shot. Toronto reduced an 8-2 deficit to two runs before its comeback ended.
Toronto’s best path to victory involves Yesavage rediscovering his earlier-season command and preventing Washington from building another early lead. If the Blue Jays are forced to chase the game again, their bullpen could face another demanding afternoon.
Washington Nationals Analysis
Washington’s offence enters Wednesday with renewed confidence.
The Nationals scored eight runs Tuesday and immediately took advantage of Bieber’s command problems. James Wood, CJ Abrams and the surrounding lineup created traffic, accepted walks and forced Toronto to use its bullpen earlier than planned.
Wood and Abrams remain the two most important hitters in Washington’s order. Wood provides elite power potential, while Abrams can affect the game through contact, speed and aggressive baserunning. Their presence gives the Nationals the ability to score without relying entirely on the bottom of the lineup.
The challenge is supporting Littell.
His 5.17 ERA makes him difficult to trust, and he recently endured an eight-run outing against the Athletics. However, he responded by allowing only one run across five innings in his next start. That bounce-back performance offers some encouragement entering Wednesday.
Littell must avoid walks and keep Toronto’s power hitters from batting with runners aboard. Springer and Okamoto showed Tuesday that the Blue Jays can quickly erase a deficit through home runs.
Washington would benefit from another fast start. Scoring early could allow Littell to pitch more aggressively while placing pressure on a Toronto bullpen that covered significant innings during the opening two games.
Why We Like This Pick
Toronto holds the better season-long starting-pitching numbers, so Washington is not the safest selection on Wednesday’s board.
The appeal comes from recent form and situational factors. Yesavage has struggled throughout July, while Washington’s offence produced eight runs Tuesday and should enter the finale with confidence.
Toronto may also be without Guerrero or forced to use him at less than full strength after his hamstring issue. That would reduce the Blue Jays’ offensive ceiling and place additional pressure on Springer, Okamoto and the rest of the order.
Littell’s elevated ERA remains a legitimate concern. However, he showed improvement in his most recent outing, and Washington has the home-field advantage in an early afternoon finale.
The Nationals moneyline is preferred over the run line because both starters carry enough volatility to make a close, high-scoring game possible.
Final Prediction
Expect both teams to create scoring opportunities.
Yesavage should record several strikeouts, but Washington’s lineup can capitalize on his recent command and run-prevention issues. Littell allows some damage, but the Nationals produce another strong offensive performance and receive enough relief pitching to secure the series.
Final Score Prediction: Washington Nationals 6, Toronto Blue Jays 5
