MacKenzie Gore gives Texas a more experienced starting option, although his 4.77 ERA and 6–9 record show that he has not consistently controlled games this season. His greatest strength remains his strikeout ability, with 136 strikeouts entering Tuesday’s start.
Gore must avoid walks and prevent Lee from creating more damage at the top of San Francisco’s lineup. The Giants may lack the same veteran depth they possessed earlier in the season, but Monday demonstrated that their younger hitters are capable of taking advantage of mistakes.
Texas needs Gore to stabilize the game after an extremely poor defensive performance. Six competitive innings would allow the Rangers to use their preferred bullpen options without asking the relief staff to cover too much of the game.
The Rangers’ offence must also respond after producing only one run Monday. Ezequiel Duran collected four hits and hit a solo home run, but the rest of the lineup provided little support.
Texas should take a patient approach against Tidwell. His early numbers are respectable, but his limited experience creates uncertainty once the lineup sees him for a second and third time.
The Rangers need to force long at-bats, create baserunners and make San Francisco decide how far it is comfortable allowing Tidwell to work. Reaching the Giants bullpen during the middle innings should give Texas a much stronger opportunity to create the decisive rally.
