Kelly does not need to completely shut down Cleveland. His responsibility will be keeping the Guardians from building an early multi-run advantage and giving Arizona’s offence enough time to work against Williams.
Limiting walks will be critical. Cleveland has struggled to score consistently, but José Ramírez, Steven Kwan and the middle of the order remain capable of creating damage when pitchers provide extra baserunners.
Arizona’s lineup enters with tremendous confidence after scoring 12 times Saturday. Perdomo and Carroll supplied the biggest swings, while James McCann added a two-run double during the seven-run seventh inning. Cleveland Guardians Analysis
Gavin Williams gives Cleveland its strongest opportunity to avoid the sweep. He has been excellent recently, recording at least 11 strikeouts in four consecutive starts while producing a 3.00 ERA and a 0.63 WHIP during that stretch.
Williams’ ability to generate swings and misses could slow an Arizona lineup that has controlled the series. He has also shown excellent command recently, recording 33 strikeouts and only one walk across a three-start stretch entering his latest outing.
Cleveland needs Williams to pitch deep into the game. The Guardians’ bullpen was heavily exposed Saturday after Parker Messick struggled, and asking the relievers to cover another extended workload would create a significant disadvantage.
The larger concern is Cleveland’s offence. The Guardians scored only once Friday and trailed 10–2 Saturday before producing a late rally against Arizona’s bullpen. Although they eventually scored eight runs, most of that production came after the game had already moved heavily in Arizona’s favour.
Cleveland must create early traffic against Kelly and give Williams some run support. If the Guardians remain quiet through the first five innings, Arizona’s lineup and bullpen should have another opportunity to decide the game late.

Williams is the better starting pitcher, but Arizona has been the stronger team throughout the series and owns the more dependable offensive profile.
