Arizona Diamondbacks vs Pittsburgh Pirates Prediction, Picks & Odds

Match Preview

The Arizona Diamondbacks and Pittsburgh Pirates complete their three-game series at PNC Park on Wednesday, July 29, 2026. First pitch is scheduled for 12:35 p.m. ET.

Arizona will start left-hander Eduardo Rodríguez, while Pittsburgh counters with right-hander Jared Jones. Rodríguez enters with a 9-3 record, a 2.64 ERA and 86 strikeouts. Jones carries a 2-1 record, a 3.72 ERA and 53 strikeouts into the series finale.

The starting matchup is competitive, but Rodríguez has delivered the stronger season-long results. His lower ERA and greater workload give Arizona a dependable foundation in a game with major National League wild-card implications.

Jones has been outstanding recently. After struggling during his first several starts following internal-brace surgery, the Pittsburgh right-hander posted a 1.29 ERA, 28 strikeouts and only four walks over four July outings. Pittsburgh has also been limiting him to approximately five innings or 80–85 pitches.

That workload restriction could become important. Even if Jones pitches effectively, Arizona may receive several opportunities against the Pirates bullpen during the middle and later innings.

With Rodríguez starting and the deeper offensive lineup, the Diamondbacks are the preferred moneyline selection.

Arizona Diamondbacks Analysis

Rodríguez is the central reason to support Arizona.

The left-hander’s 2.64 ERA demonstrates that he has consistently limited damage and kept the Diamondbacks in position to win. He must attack Pittsburgh’s lineup early and avoid allowing free baserunners ahead of its strongest hitters.

Brandon Lowe has been particularly dangerous during this series. He collected three hits and drove in two runs during Pittsburgh’s 3-2 extra-inning victory Monday, including the walk-off single in the bottom of the 10th. Bryan Reynolds also produced the game-tying double during the eighth inning.

Rodríguez must keep those hitters from batting with multiple runners aboard. Pittsburgh has shown that it can remain patient, extend close games and capitalize when opposing bullpens make mistakes.

Arizona’s offence needs to provide stronger situational hitting than it did Monday. The Diamondbacks went 2-for-14 with runners in scoring position and failed to score after placing runners on second and third with one out during the 10th inning.

Ketel Marte, Corbin Carroll and Geraldo Perdomo give Arizona a strong combination of contact, speed and power near the top of the order. The Diamondbacks should focus on forcing Jones into long at-bats and reaching Pittsburgh’s bullpen before the sixth inning.

Jones has been difficult to hit throughout July, so Arizona cannot rely entirely on home runs. Productive contact, stolen-base pressure and improved execution with runners aboard will be essential.

Pittsburgh Pirates Analysis

Jones provides Pittsburgh with a legitimate opportunity to win the finale.

His July turnaround has been impressive. Opponents produced only a .100 batting average against him across four starts, while he recorded a 0.52 WHIP and a strong strikeout-to-walk ratio.

He most recently worked six effective innings against the Chicago Cubs, allowing only two hits and one walk while recording five strikeouts. Pittsburgh will hope for another controlled performance against an Arizona lineup that has recently struggled to finish scoring opportunities.

The concern is Jones’ workload. The Pirates have carefully managed his pitch count following surgery, and he may again leave after approximately five innings even if he is pitching well.

That would place significant responsibility on the Pittsburgh bullpen. Arizona already saw several Pirates relievers during the opening games of the series, which could help the Diamondbacks’ hitters recognize pitch patterns and preferred sequences.

Pittsburgh’s offence must also solve Rodríguez. The Pirates have produced timely hits during the series, but Wednesday’s starter represents a more difficult run-prevention matchup.

Their best path to victory involves Jones working efficiently, building an early lead and allowing Pittsburgh to use its preferred late-inning relievers.

Why We Like This Pick

Arizona has the better season-long starting pitcher and the deeper offensive ceiling.

Rodríguez enters with a 2.64 ERA, compared with Jones’ 3.72 mark. Jones has been the hotter pitcher recently, but his limited workload means Pittsburgh may need to cover four or more innings with its bullpen.

The Diamondbacks have been disappointing with runners in scoring position during this series, but they continue to create opportunities. Improved execution in one or two key situations could completely change the result.

Pittsburgh remains dangerous at home, and Jones’ recent form prevents this from being a safe selection. However, Arizona has more established offensive depth and should have the advantage once both starters leave.

The moneyline is preferred over the run line because Jones is capable of keeping Pittsburgh within one run throughout the opening and middle innings.

Final Prediction

Expect Jones to challenge Arizona early and generate several strikeouts. Rodríguez should provide the steadier overall performance and limit Pittsburgh’s strongest hitters from producing a major rally.

The Diamondbacks improve with runners in scoring position, reach the Pirates bullpen during the middle innings and earn the road victory.

Final Score Prediction: Arizona Diamondbacks 4, Pittsburgh Pirates 3
