Atlanta’s bullpen usage deserves attention after Friday’s extra-inning game. Elieser Hernández covered three scoreless innings and earned the victory, but he was designated for assignment Saturday as the Braves continued reshuffling their relief staff. Young gives Baltimore a realistic chance to even the series.
The right-hander enters with an 8-2 record and a 3.25 ERA, making him the more dependable starter based on season-long numbers. He must keep Atlanta’s power hitters from extending their arms and avoid allowing free baserunners ahead of Olson and Riley.
Baltimore’s offence also proved Friday that it can pressure Atlanta’s pitching staff.
Christian Encarnacion-Strand drove in four runs, including a home run in the bottom of the 10th. The Orioles repeatedly responded after Atlanta scored and nearly completed a dramatic comeback after falling four runs behind in extra innings.
However, Baltimore’s lineup is dealing with important absences. Catchers Adley Rutschman and Samuel Basallo are on the injured list, reducing the Orioles’ depth and removing two potentially dangerous bats from the order.
