Anthony Kay gives Chicago a capable but inconsistent starting option. His 4.25 ERA shows that opposing teams have regularly created scoring opportunities, and Tampa Bay should receive chances if it remains patient at the plate.
Kay’s greatest challenge will be preventing the Rays from building traffic through walks and extended at-bats. Tampa Bay does not need to rely entirely on home runs to score. The Rays can manufacture offence with singles, speed and aggressive baserunning, as they demonstrated when Jonny DeLuca stole second before scoring Saturday’s only run.
Chicago’s offence must also respond after an extremely poor performance. The White Sox struck out 16 times Saturday, recorded only five hits and produced just one at-bat with a runner in scoring position. Their hitters repeatedly chased pitches outside the strike zone, even during full counts.
That approach must improve against Jax. Chicago has enough power to change the game quickly, but the White Sox cannot expect another four-homer performance like Friday’s opener. They need to create baserunners ahead of their strongest power hitters and force Tampa Bay’s starter to work from the stretch.
The White Sox have also been considerably weaker on the road than at home. Their road record entering Sunday was 23–30, compared with a strong 32–19 home mark.
Tampa Bay Rays Analysis
Griffin Jax provides Tampa Bay with the more favourable starting-pitching outlook. His 3.74 ERA is better than Kay’s 4.25 mark, giving the Rays a slightly more dependable option for the series finale.
Jax must avoid the mistakes Tampa Bay’s pitchers made Friday. Chicago’s lineup punished elevated pitches and hit four home runs, demonstrating the danger created when the White Sox receive pitches they can drive.
The right-hander’s priority should be limiting walks and keeping runners off base ahead of Chicago’s power threats. Solo home runs are manageable, but allowing free baserunners could turn one mistake into a three-run inning.
Tampa Bay’s offence also needs a more productive performance after scoring only once Saturday. The Rays did enough to win because of their dominant pitching, but they cannot assume another shutout will protect them Sunday.
Kay’s elevated ERA provides an opportunity for the Rays to create more sustained pressure. Tampa Bay should remain patient, force him into deep counts and attack when he falls behind.
The Rays also enter with confidence after their tenth shutout victory of the season. Their bullpen was excellent Saturday, with Cam Booser, Kevin Kelly, Garrett Cleavinger and Bryan Baker protecting the narrow advantage after Rasmussen departed.
