Match Preview
The Cleveland Guardians and Tampa Bay Rays complete their three-game series at Tropicana Field on Sunday, July 26, 2026. First pitch is scheduled for 12:15 p.m. ET.
Cleveland is expected to start left-hander Parker Messick, who enters with an 8-5 record, a 2.68 ERA and 116 strikeouts. Tampa Bay counters with right-hander Drew Rasmussen, who carries an 8-5 record, a 3.28 ERA and 103 strikeouts into the series finale.
The Rays have already secured the series after winning the opening two games. Tampa Bay dominated Friday’s matchup 11-3 before shutting Cleveland out 3-0 on Saturday. The Guardians have now lost four consecutive games and have scored only four total runs during their last three contests.
Messick gives Cleveland the better starting ERA, so this is not an automatic selection. However, Tampa Bay has controlled the series offensively and on the mound, owns home-field advantage and has a chance to complete the sweep.
The Rays are the preferred moneyline selection.
Cleveland Guardians Analysis
Messick represents Cleveland’s strongest reason for optimism Sunday.
The left-hander has delivered an excellent season, recording a 2.68 ERA and 116 strikeouts through 20 starts. Those numbers suggest he can limit damaging contact and prevent Tampa Bay from producing another offensive performance like the 11-run outburst it delivered Friday.
Messick must establish command immediately. The Rays have consistently created traffic throughout this series, and Tampa Bay’s lineup has shown that it can score through more than home runs. Yandy Díaz, Junior Caminero, Cedric Mullins and Chandler Simpson can create pressure through contact, doubles, speed and situational hitting.
Cleveland’s larger concern is its offence.
The Guardians managed only four hits and one walk during Saturday’s shutout loss. Nick Martinez held them scoreless across six innings before Tampa Bay’s bullpen completed the victory. Cleveland has now lost four straight and has struggled to produce sustained offensive pressure.
José Ramírez remains capable of changing the game with one swing, but Cleveland needs production beyond the middle of its order. The Guardians cannot depend on one hitter to solve Rasmussen and a rested Tampa Bay bullpen.
Cleveland’s best path involves Messick keeping the game low-scoring and the lineup capitalizing on one or two early opportunities. Falling behind by multiple runs would create another difficult situation for an offence that has struggled throughout the weekend.
Tampa Bay Rays Analysis
Rasmussen gives Tampa Bay another dependable starter.
The right-hander enters with an 8-5 record, a 3.28 ERA and 103 strikeouts. His season numbers are not quite as strong as Messick’s, but he has enough command and swing-and-miss ability to continue Cleveland’s offensive struggles.
Rasmussen does not need to dominate for seven or eight innings. Five or six controlled frames should be enough if he limits walks and keeps Ramírez from batting with runners in scoring position.
Tampa Bay’s offence has received contributions from throughout the lineup during the series.
The Rays recorded 15 hits in Friday’s 11-3 victory. On Saturday, Díaz collected his 1,000th hit in a Rays uniform, while Caminero, Mullins and Hunter Feduccia helped produce the three runs in a much tighter contest.
That versatility matters against Messick. The Rays may not produce a large number of runs against a starter with a 2.68 ERA, but they do not need an explosive performance to win.
Tampa Bay’s bullpen has also been excellent during the series. Cole Sulser, Garrett Cleavinger and Bryan Baker combined to complete Saturday’s shutout, with Baker earning his 27th save.
The Rays should enter Sunday confident that even a narrow lead can be protected.
Why We Like This Pick
Cleveland has the better starting-pitcher ERA, but Tampa Bay holds the advantage in nearly every other important area.
The Rays have won the first two games by a combined score of 14-3. Their lineup has produced in both high-scoring and low-scoring situations, while their pitching staff has repeatedly prevented Cleveland from building momentum.
Messick could make this the closest game of the series. His command and strikeout ability should give Cleveland a legitimate chance to avoid the sweep.
However, the Guardians’ offensive form makes them difficult to trust. Tampa Bay has the deeper lineup, stronger bullpen and home-field advantage. Rasmussen should provide enough quality innings for the Rays to remain in control before their relievers finish the game.
The moneyline is preferred over the run line because Messick’s strong season could keep the final margin narrow.
Final Prediction
Expect Messick to challenge Tampa Bay and prevent another early offensive explosion. Rasmussen should match him closely while Cleveland continues struggling to create sustained scoring opportunities.
The Rays’ lineup depth and bullpen advantage should eventually decide the matchup as Tampa Bay completes the three-game sweep.
Final Score Prediction: Tampa Bay Rays 4, Cleveland Guardians 2
