Detroit Tigers vs Athletics Prediction, Picks & Odds

Match Preview

The Detroit Tigers and Athletics open a three-game series Friday, July 31, at Sutter Health Park in West Sacramento. First pitch is scheduled for 9:40 p.m. Eastern, with Casey Mize expected to start for Detroit against Athletics left-hander Jeffrey Springs.

Detroit enters the matchup with a significant advantage in the starting-pitching department. Mize carries a 2.70 ERA and has been one of the Tigers’ most dependable starters, while Springs enters with a 6.23 ERA after struggling badly throughout July.

The Athletics remain dangerous offensively at their temporary home park, but their pitching and bullpen inconsistency continue to make them difficult to trust. They enter this series after surrendering a late lead against Boston and recording their tenth consecutive series loss.

Detroit also controlled the previous meeting between these teams. The Tigers swept a three-game series earlier in July and outscored the Athletics 16–4. With Mize on the mound and another favourable matchup against Springs, Detroit is the stronger moneyline selection.

Detroit Tigers Analysis

Casey Mize gives Detroit a reliable foundation for Friday’s pick. The right-hander enters with a 2.70 ERA and is coming off his eighth quality start of the season. Over his previous seven outings, Mize has posted a 3.23 ERA with 36 strikeouts and only seven walks across 39 innings.

That combination of command and run prevention should be valuable against an Athletics lineup with several capable power hitters. Mize’s priority will be limiting walks and keeping runners off base ahead of hitters such as Shea Langeliers, Lawrence Butler and Jacob Wilson.

The Athletics can punish mistakes, particularly when pitches are left elevated. However, Mize has shown enough control to avoid consistently giving opponents additional opportunities. He does not need to shut Oakland out; six competitive innings with limited damage should place Detroit in an excellent position.

The Tigers’ offence receives an even more appealing matchup. Springs has struggled throughout the season and was especially ineffective in July, recording a 10.13 ERA across three appearances. One of those outings came against Detroit, when he surrendered six runs and took the loss.

Detroit should remain patient against the left-hander. Springs has enough experience and movement to generate outs when hitters chase, but his recent command and contact issues suggest the Tigers will receive pitches they can drive.

The expected promotion of top prospect Max Clark could also provide Detroit with additional speed and energy. Clark hit .338 with a 1.086 OPS and five home runs during July in Triple-A, although his role in Friday’s lineup had not yet been officially confirmed at the time of writing.

Athletics Analysis

Jeffrey Springs is the biggest concern for Oakland. His 6.23 season ERA reflects significant run-prevention problems, and his recent form has been even worse. He returns to the rotation after dealing with a hip issue, adding further uncertainty to his workload and effectiveness.

Springs must avoid falling behind Detroit’s hitters. The Tigers have already seen him recently and produced six runs in that matchup, giving their lineup familiarity with his pitch mix and tendencies.

Oakland’s best path to victory will be scoring early against Mize and preventing Detroit from settling into the game. Langeliers provides substantial power, while Butler and Wilson have shown the ability to create extra-base damage.

The Athletics generated several scoring opportunities during Thursday’s loss to Boston, but they struggled with runners in scoring position and failed to build enough separation before their bullpen surrendered the lead.

That bullpen remains another major concern. Oakland cannot afford to ask its relievers to protect a narrow advantage for several innings, especially against a Detroit lineup that should continue applying pressure after Springs leaves the game.

The Athletics may score a few runs at home, but their starting-pitching disadvantage gives them very little margin for error.

Why We Like This Pick

The difference between the starting pitchers is too significant to ignore.

Mize enters with a 2.70 ERA and has consistently provided Detroit with quality innings. Springs carries a 6.23 ERA, struggled badly in July and already allowed six runs against the Tigers earlier this month.

Detroit has also dominated the season series so far. The Tigers swept the previous three-game set and held a 16–4 scoring advantage, showing that their pitching and lineup match up well against Oakland.

The Athletics possess enough offensive talent to make the game competitive, but their pitching staff has not shown the reliability required to trust them against a superior starter.

Detroit should be able to create traffic against Springs, score during the early innings and force Oakland to rely on its vulnerable bullpen. If Mize delivers another quality start, the Tigers should control the matchup from beginning to end.

Final Prediction

Mize limits Oakland’s power and delivers six strong innings. Detroit attacks Springs early, builds a multi-run lead and adds insurance against the Athletics bullpen.

Final Score Prediction: Detroit Tigers 6, Athletics 3
