Randy Vásquez faces a difficult assignment against an Arizona lineup that enters with confidence. His 4.45 ERA is nearly two full runs higher than Rodriguez’s mark, leaving him with less margin for error in a hitter-friendly environment.
Vásquez must avoid walks and keep runners off base ahead of Corbin Carroll, Ketel Marte and the middle of the Diamondbacks order. Arizona showed Monday that it can create offence through both sustained rallies and one decisive swing.
The right-hander’s best approach will be attacking the lower portion of the strike zone and forcing Arizona to string together hits. Elevated mistakes could become especially damaging at Chase Field, where extra-base hits can quickly turn a manageable inning into a multi-run deficit.
San Diego’s lineup also needs a much stronger performance. The Padres produced only one unearned run Monday and received almost nothing from their most established hitters. Their four primary bats finishing 0-for-15 made it nearly impossible to support Michael King despite a competitive start.
Tatis and Machado remain capable of changing the game with one swing, while the Padres recently strengthened their rotation by acquiring Robbie Ray. However, that addition does not directly solve Tuesday’s matchup against Rodriguez.
San Diego’s best path is forcing Rodriguez into deep counts, creating early traffic and preventing Arizona from comfortably protecting another lead with its bullpen.
Arizona Diamondbacks Analysis
Eduardo Rodriguez gives Arizona the strongest advantage in this matchup. His 10–3 record and 2.48 ERA indicate that he has consistently limited opponents and provided the Diamondbacks with dependable innings.
Rodriguez must remain aggressive against a San Diego lineup that should enter determined to respond. The Padres have enough right-handed power to punish mistakes, so the left-hander cannot rely entirely on Monday’s poor offensive performance repeating itself.
Still, Rodriguez does not need to pitch a shutout. Six competitive innings with two or three runs allowed should give Arizona’s lineup enough time to attack Vásquez.
The Diamondbacks enter with strong momentum after winning five of six. Monday’s victory was especially encouraging because Arizona received both excellent starting pitching and balanced offensive production. Tawa delivered the biggest swing, while Geraldo Perdomo also contributed two hits.
Arizona should take a patient approach against Vásquez. His elevated ERA suggests scoring opportunities will develop if the Diamondbacks avoid chasing and force him to work with runners aboard.
The Diamondbacks also have a meaningful postseason incentive. Their victory Monday moved them into a tie for a Wild Card position, making each remaining divisional game increasingly important.

The starting-pitching matchup strongly favours Arizona.
Rodriguez owns the superior record and ERA, while Vásquez has been considerably less dependable. Arizona also enters with better momentum after controlling Monday’s opener from the middle innings onward.
