Cease can overpower hitters with his fastball, but his breaking pitches make him especially difficult when he works ahead in the count. St. Louis has recently struggled to create sustained offensive pressure, making this a favourable matchup for a pitcher capable of generating strikeouts with runners on base.
Toronto’s offence remains the larger concern. The Blue Jays have not produced consistently enough this season, and their 50–59 record reflects those difficulties. They could also be without Guerrero or receive a limited version of their star first baseman as he deals with a hamstring issue.
Even without a completely healthy lineup, Toronto should receive opportunities against Leahy. The Blue Jays must work patient at-bats, create traffic ahead of their power hitters and avoid relying entirely on solo home runs.
Scoring early would be especially valuable. An early advantage would allow Cease to attack the strike zone aggressively and place additional pressure on a Cardinals lineup coming off a disappointing series.
