Texas does not need to score eight or nine runs. With deGrom starting, four or five runs could be enough to produce a completely different result.
Houston Astros Analysis
Ronel Blanco is expected to start for Houston after the Astros received an excellent overall pitching performance in the opener.
Blanco must avoid giving Texas an early opportunity to regain confidence. The Rangers possess enough power to erase Friday’s result quickly if Houston provides walks or leaves pitches over the centre of the plate.
The Astros’ offence enters Saturday in excellent form. Friday’s victory was not built around one hitter, as multiple players delivered extra-base hits and productive at-bats. Houston also avoided overworking its bullpen because the game became lopsided, leaving its relievers relatively well positioned for Saturday.
That makes this a difficult matchup for Texas despite deGrom’s presence. Houston has the confidence, lineup depth and home-field advantage to win again.
However, the Astros are unlikely to receive the same quantity of hittable pitches against deGrom. Their hitters must remain disciplined and avoid chasing his breaking pitches once he gets ahead in the count.
Houston’s best path is forcing deGrom to work hard, increasing his pitch count and reaching the Rangers bullpen before the seventh inning.
