Texas Rangers Analysis
Kumar Rocker gives Texas an opportunity to keep the finale close, but his 4.03 ERA and 4–8 record show that his performances have not been consistent enough to make the Rangers the preferred side.
Rocker must be especially careful during his first trip through Houston’s lineup. In his July 11 appearance against the Astros, Yordan Alvarez hit a two-run homer in the opening inning. Alvarez has repeatedly punished Texas pitching and remains one of the most dangerous hitters Rocker will face Sunday.
The right-hander’s priority should be keeping runners off base ahead of Alvarez, Christian Walker and the middle of Houston’s order. Walks or poorly located pitches could quickly create another multi-run inning.
Texas’ offence performed better Saturday than it did during Friday’s blowout, scoring four runs and remaining within one run through the final inning. However, the Rangers could not complete the comeback against Josh Hader.
The Rangers need to apply pressure earlier against Lambert. Their best approach will be forcing him into deep counts, creating traffic ahead of the middle of the order and preventing Houston from comfortably managing the game with its strongest relievers.
Texas has enough power to score several runs, but Rocker must prevent the Astros from gaining another early advantage.
Houston Astros Analysis
Peter Lambert provides Houston with the starting-pitching advantage. His 8–5 record and 3.06 ERA compare favourably with Rocker’s numbers, while his 100 strikeouts show that he can finish difficult at-bats without relying entirely on his defence.
Lambert does not need to dominate for seven innings. Five or six competitive frames should be enough if he limits walks and prevents Texas from producing a large inning.
Houston’s offence enters with considerable confidence. The Astros scored 11 runs Friday and followed with five more Saturday, receiving important production throughout the order. Taylor Trammell delivered two RBIs in the second game, while Walker drove in another run against deGrom.
The Astros should remain aggressive against Rocker when he falls behind but avoid chasing pitches outside the strike zone. Alvarez has already demonstrated that he matches up well against the Texas starter, and Houston’s deeper lineup should continue creating pressure even when its biggest power hitter is pitched around.
Houston’s bullpen is another important advantage. Hader successfully protected Saturday’s one-run lead, and the Astros have repeatedly executed well during their current five-game winning streak.
