Toronto Blue Jays vs Washington Nationals Prediction, Picks & Odds

Match Preview

The Toronto Blue Jays and Washington Nationals continue their three-game series at Nationals Park on Tuesday, July 28, 2026. First pitch is scheduled for 6:45 p.m. ET.

Toronto is expected to start right-hander Shane Bieber, while Washington counters with right-hander Cade Cavalli. Bieber enters with a 2-1 record, a 4.70 ERA and 22 strikeouts. Cavalli carries a 7-4 record, a 3.58 ERA and 127 strikeouts into the matchup.

The Blue Jays won Monday’s opener 3-2 despite receiving fewer than three complete innings from Max Scherzer. Toronto’s bullpen covered the final 6⅓ innings and limited Washington to one additional run, allowing the visitors to protect a narrow advantage.

Washington had multiple opportunities to take control but could not produce enough timely offence. The Nationals should still enter Tuesday with confidence in the starting-pitching matchup. Cavalli owns the lower ERA, significantly more strikeouts and a much larger workload than Bieber this season.

Toronto’s bullpen was excellent Monday, but asking the same relief group to cover another large portion of Tuesday’s game could become difficult. With Cavalli on the mound and Washington playing at home, the Nationals are the preferred moneyline selection.

Toronto Blue Jays Analysis

Toronto showed strong pitching depth during Monday’s victory.

Scherzer required 75 pitches to record only eight outs, allowing one run on four hits and three walks. The Blue Jays then received excellent work from six relievers, who combined to hold Washington to one run over the remainder of the game.

That performance secured the victory, but it could create a disadvantage Tuesday. Several Toronto relievers were required to work in the opener, and manager John Schneider may be reluctant to use the same late-inning options for another extended workload.

Bieber must therefore provide Toronto with more length.

His 4.70 ERA is respectable but not dominant. Washington’s lineup has enough power and speed to punish mistakes, particularly if Bieber falls behind in counts and is forced to throw fastballs over the centre of the plate.

The Blue Jays’ offence produced only three runs Monday. Myles Straw collected two hits, while Kazuma Okamoto helped create a crucial run by stealing second base before eventually scoring. Toronto did enough to win, but it did not overwhelm Washington’s pitching staff.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. remains Toronto’s most dangerous hitter, while George Springer and the surrounding lineup provide additional experience. The Blue Jays must place pressure on Cavalli early rather than allowing him to settle into a strikeout rhythm.

Toronto’s recent form also remains a concern. The Blue Jays entered Tuesday at 49-58 and had gone only 3-7 over their previous 10 games before Monday’s result.

Washington Nationals Analysis

Cavalli gives Washington the strongest reason to support the home team.

The right-hander enters with a 3.58 ERA and 127 strikeouts. His ability to generate swings and misses should be valuable against a Toronto lineup that has struggled to consistently produce extended rallies.

Cavalli must control Guerrero and avoid issuing walks ahead of the middle of the order. If he attacks the strike zone and limits Toronto’s extra-base damage, Washington should have an opportunity to play from ahead.

The Nationals’ offence needs a better performance with runners aboard.

Washington produced only two runs Monday despite Scherzer struggling with his command and Toronto using six different relievers. The Nationals were unable to fully capitalize on three Scherzer walks or their late scoring opportunities.

CJ Abrams and James Wood remain the centrepieces of the lineup. Abrams can create immediate pressure through power and speed, while Wood gives Washington one of the most dangerous home-run threats in the National League.

The Nationals should remain patient against Bieber and attempt to raise his pitch count. Toronto’s bullpen was heavily involved Monday, so forcing Bieber out before the seventh inning could create favourable late-game matchups.

Washington also has home-field advantage and should approach Tuesday with urgency. Dropping the first two games of the series to a Toronto team well below .500 would be a significant missed opportunity.

Why We Like This Pick

The starting-pitching comparison favours Washington.

Cavalli enters with a lower ERA, a better record and more than five times as many strikeouts as Bieber. He has provided the Nationals with the more dependable body of work over the full season.

Toronto deserves credit for winning Monday, but its bullpen was required to record 19 outs. That workload could affect which relievers are available Tuesday, especially if Bieber fails to work deep into the game.

Washington’s offence was disappointing in the opener, but Abrams and Wood give the Nationals enough upside to respond. The home team also has the stronger starting pitcher and should receive additional scoring opportunities against Toronto’s less-rested relief staff.

The moneyline is preferred over the run line because Monday’s close result showed how evenly matched these teams can be.

Final Prediction

Expect Cavalli to generate several strikeouts and limit Toronto’s strongest hitters through the opening innings.

Bieber should keep the game competitive, but Washington’s lineup produces more effectively with runners in scoring position than it did Monday. The Nationals take the lead during the middle innings before their bullpen protects the advantage.

Final Score Prediction: Washington Nationals 5, Toronto Blue Jays 3
